The Peerless General Finance & Investment Company Limited (PGFI)

Peerless is proud of its humble beginning. Founded in 1932, at Narayanganj, Bangladesh by a group of Idealist friends as Peerless Insurance Co. Ltd, engaged in providing provident insurance solutions. Later, the company changed its focus to small savings and gradually became one of the most respected NBFCs of the country. In 1974, the registered office was shifted to Kolkata. The name of the company was then changed to The Peerless General Finance and Investment Company Limited, which reflected the expanding scope of the company’s business.

Late Radheyshyam Roy, was a school teacher in Narayanganj, Bangladesh. He gave up his promising career in a premier European Insurance Company to establish, Peerless, along with a likeminded idealist friend Late K. K. Chatterjee and the duo started on their mission to do their bit for the nation in the business of Provident Insurance with an initial subscribed capital of Rs.300 and went on to become a beacon of hope for Indians of small means wanting to stand on their own feet with dignity.

Late K K Chatterjee, was a lifelong friend anda comrade of Late R S Roy. Not only a co-founder of Peerless, also an idealist who wanted to give up all for the Nation. His righteous and uncompromising ways, along with his cheerful willingness to go extra mile for the benefit of the company that needed to be shared, guide it in its eternal quest for excellence to date.

Under his leadership, the path that Peerless took, was nothing less than echo making. He was passionate about improving the lives of common people. He also introduced the Free Accidental Death Benefit for its policy holders as an additional benefit, under an agreement with the Calcutta Insurance Ltd. he introduced several new ways of doing business , such as the concept of direct marketing, automatic promotion system to promote self-employment, which later became industry benchmark Always attentive to the needs of the poor, he arranged relief for the flood affected at Mindapore in 1978, long before corporate social responsibility became mandatory.

Starting as an Assistant Secretary in 1969, he has travelled the entire route to the top of the Peerless. He made Peerless a corporate conglomerate. Mr Dipankar Chatterji, is First Class B.Com (Hons) and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. After a 3 year stint in an MNC, he joined L. B. Jha & Co., Chartered Accountants in 1975. Presently, he is a Senior Partner of the firm. Mr. Chatterji has been on the Board of Directors of a large number of companies including four nationalised banks, a public sector mutual fund, an associate company of State Bank of India. Presently, he is a Director of Union Bank of India. Besides, he is also the Chairman of The Calcutta Stock Exchange Ltd. and the Vice-President of one of the top 10 B-Schools in the country.In addition to this , Mr Chatterji served on different important Committees constituted by the Government and other professional bodies as Member and Chairman.

Mr Bhargab Lahiri is presently the Deputy Managing Director of The Peerless General Finance & Investment Company Ltd. He was an Advocate, City Civil & Sessions Court and High Court at Calcutta, besides being a Member of W. B. State Bar Council.

Mr Lahiri is also a Director on the Boards of Peerless Hotels Ltd., Peerless Securities Ltd. and Kaizen Leisure & Holidays Ltd.

Mr A. K. Mukhuty is a Chartered Accountant by qualification. He is associated with the Peerless Group for the last 39 years when he joined The Peerless General Finance and Investment Co Ltd (PGFI) as an accountant in the year 1980. Presently, Mr. Mukhuty is the Director-Finance and the Chief Financial Officer of PGFI.

Mr. Mukhuty is a member of the Board of Directors of Peerless Securities Ltd, Peerless Commodities Ltd, Kaizen Leisure & Holidays Ltd and Sikha Holding Pvt. Ltd

Mr. Deepankar Bose is a management leader and professional from the Banking and Financial Services industry. Formerly, he was Executive President and Head Corporate Centre of Bandhan Bank. Prior to that he worked at Senior positions in State Bank of India and State Bank of India California.

Shri Supriyo Sinha is a Graduate from the Harvard Business School, a Gold Medalist from IIM, a Mechanical Engineer from the IIT, Kharagpur, and a topper at the WB Higher Secondary examination.

Mr. Sinha has over 20 years of professional experience, as a Management Consultant at Mckinsey & Co., as a Business Leader at ABP Pvt. Ltd. and as Head of Strategy and New Initiatives at Axis Bank.

Mr S K Roy, Managing Director of The Peerless General Finance & Investment Company Ltd. Hewas earlier a Director of West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. He is currently the Chairman of Peerless Hotels Ltd. and Kaizen Hotels & Resorts Ltd. He is also a Director on the Boards of Peerless Securities Ltd., Peerless Hospitex Hospital & Research Center Ltd., Bengal Peerless Housing Development Co. Ltd.,., Peerless Financial Products Distribution Limited ., besides being Director of some other prominent Companies.

Mr Roy is a philanthropist par excellence and a devout follower of Swami Vivekananda and is actively involved with Ramakrishna Mission. He is also the Manging Trustee of Peerless Golden Jubilee Charitable Trust and Chairman of B K Roy Foundation .He was conferred with the prestigious Padmashri award on March 31, 2009 by the then President of India Her Excellency Smt. Pratibha Patil.

Mr A K Mukhuty, is a Chartered Accountant by qualification. He is associated with Peerless for the last 37 years when he joined The Peerless General Finance & Investment Company Ltd. in 1980 as an Accountant. Presently, Mr. Mukhuty is the Chief Financial Officer and is heading both Finance & Treasury Departments.

Mr. K Balasubramanian

Mr K Balasubramanian, is a Law Graduate and a Fellow Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. He is the Company Secretary of The Peerless General Finance & Investment Company Ltd. at present. Mr Balasubramanian has over two decades of experience in various facets of Corporate Legal and Secretarial disciplines. He has authored several articles of interest on corporate legal issues published in leading journals.
